About Religious Education and Observance at St Mary's
St Mary's R.C. Church

All aspects of life in St Mary’s are based on gospel values, and Religious Education is taught throughout the school based upon the Catholic tradition within the Christian faith.
We help children to appreciate that religion is concerned with relationships which have implications for the value one sets on people for personal behaviour.
The Religious Education curriculum is based upon the National 5 – 14 Guidelines and encompasses the study of Christianity, personal Search and Other World Religions, which aims to help children to an understanding of themselves and their world.

We encourage in our pupils’ sensitivity towards others.
We try to use human experience to highlight the areas of life with which religion deals and to encourage the children to search for truth, values and the meaning of life.

We explore ways in which Jesus is central to the Catholic Faith and Christian belief and worship and give some understanding of the place of religion in the development of Scotland’s history, society and culture while acknowledging the wider social and cultural impact of various religions.

Religious teaching and learning in schools of the Dunkeld Diocese is based upon the Veritas “Alive O” programme and has also introduced “Education for Love” to develop pupils’ understanding of relationships and sex education.

St Mary's R.C. Church

Our pupils are prepared for Confirmation and First Communion in Primary 4.
Information is sent to parents in good time prior to the dates for the administration of these sacraments.

Under Section 9 of the Education (Scotland) Act 1980, it is stated that any parent has the right to withdraw his/her child from religious education and observance.

In our school we are committed, both through ethos and the curriculum to provide appropriate opportunities for the development of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural values.
This will be undertaken in partnership with parents and will take account of the individual needs of pupils and the views of parents.
