The school is staffed according to the regulations of the Scottish Education Dept. The number of pupils on the roll
determines the number of teachers allocated.
At present, we have 15 Staff which includes the Head Teacher. Depute Head Teachers, as well as deputising in the absence
of the Head Teacher, have responsibility for overseeing the academic progress and pastoral care of pupils. Mrs Gowans
oversees the P1 - P3 classes and the Nursery, while Mrs Munro, based in the Primary Building, oversees upper primary pupils.
The school also has a number of Staff who support class teachers in certain areas of the curriculum with their
specialist expertise. These teachers provide Learning Support, Music, Art and Physical Education.
The school also offers instrumental tuition in piano, violin, viola, cello, brass and bagpipes.
In addition to the teaching Staff, our school also has the services of two Classroom Assistants,
two Lunchtime Supervisors, and two Auxiliaries, one to each building, who look after the needs of the
children during the school day.
We also have a Healthy Eating Assistant based in the Infant Building.
For a downloadable copy of our School Lunchtime Menu, or for information about our school aims, uniform policy and more, please visit our
General page. For further detailed information regarding school catchment area, admission criteria and more, please
visit our Handbook page where you can download a copy of our current Primary School Handbook. Reports by H.M. Inspectorate of Education
and Dundee City Council are also available to download from our School Reports page.

Children with particular educational needs:
When a child is having difficulties, short term or long term, in coping with the programme of work provided by the school,
support can be given by our Support for Learning Staff, in consultation with parents.
Additional support needs:
Since November 2005, there has been a new way of supporting children and young people who are having problems making progress at school.
Most children make satisfactory progress in school and their education can be fully supported by their class teacher.
Some children with significant additional support needs may need the support of an Individualised Education programme.
A very small number of children with significant and long-term additional support needs – may need a Co-ordinated
Support Plan as well as an Individualised Education programme. These will be children who also receive a lot of
support from people outside education, for example, from health or social work staff. If necessary, please contact the school for further advice.

Child protection:
As one of Dundee City Council’s professional services, the Education Department has an important responsibility in keeping
the children and young people of Dundee safe from harm.
This is an extension of the care and protection which you as a parent provide for your child and so we see our partnership
with you as important in meeting that responsibility.
Supporting us in this work are inter-agency agreements protecting children with our partner services in health, Social Work Department
and Tayside Police.
If at any time, you have child protection concerns about your child or any other child who attends this school, you are
encouraged to talk about your concerns with a member of the school staff.
It will also be useful for you to know that in every school, there is a specially trained member of staff who is the school’s
Designated Child Protection Officer.
This person takes a co-ordinating role whenever a child protection concern for a child is reported.
In your school, the Designated Child Protection Officer is Mrs Kathleen Gowans, Depute Head Teacher, (tel: 436707).
If you do not want to speak to school staff, you can contact the Access team on 01382 435107 or, if you are
telephoning after 5.00 pm, the Out of Hours Team on 432270.
Where concerns are expressed about a child, those concerns will be considered with our partner agencies in confidence
to ensure that the child is kept safe.

|
Attendance:
The Dundee School Attendance Initiative seeks to improve the attendance and timekeeping of all pupils. By law, parents
must ensure their child’s regular attendance at School.
In the case of absence, parents are requested to contact the school Office on the first day of absence:
Telephone - 436707
Should the school not be notified on the first day of absence:
the school will telephone parents during the morning of the first day of absence.
if unexplained absence continues, the Home School Support Service will arrange to visit
you and your child at home.

In the Infant Building –
To ensure the safety of pupils, the Infant doors are secured after 9.00 am but entry can be gained by parents ringing the bell.
In the Primary Building –
Parents and/or pupils should report to the school Office having gained entry by the “inter-com” system at the main door in the
upper playground in the St Mary’s Lane.
Anti-Bullying Policy:
The school operates an anti-bullying policy which encourages pupils to speak to Staff and parents, should they feel they are
being bullied. Parents are also encouraged to contact the school if they feel that they have concerns about the well-being of their children.

Street Crossing Patrols:

Emergency Contact:

Information and Communication Technology:
Dundee City Council Education Authority has made major financial
investment in the provision of computers in schools and St
Mary’s pupils have benefited from this investment.
Throughout our school, from Nursery to Primary 7, our pupils are
using and learning about computers and how to use them in their
learning.
Skill development ranges from logging on and off to
using spreadsheets, the internet and our classroom interactive
whiteboards.
In our classrooms, the traditional Blackboard has been competing
for our pupils attention with the addition of our new interactive Whiteboards.
Like the revolution that took place in classrooms all over the country when pupils
replaced their slates and chalk with paper and pencil, Teachers now have a whole
new resource with which they can communicate with their pupils.
|
|
Replacing the Teacher's trusty stick of chalk, is a modern electronic "pen" that can be used both as a "mouse" on
the touch sensitive screen, or can be used to write directly onto the whiteboard in the
same way that a traditional blackboard would be used.
Teachers can display images, texts, photographs, and even access the World Wide Web to
bring the very best in teaching resources to our classrooms.

St Mary's Health Promoting School:
Like other schools all over Scotland, St Mary’s has Health Promoting School status, which means that we seek to improve
the health of our pupils through what we do physically and what we eat.
We have had a considerable increase recently in the number of clubs providing physical activities after school and we
still maintain our extra-curricular activities of Netball, Football, Badminton and Basketball.
The school participates in many games festivals organised by the City Council Education Department.
The appointment of our Healthy Eating Assistant has helped to encourage better eating at lunchtimes and provide
a healthy eating tuck shop in the Infants.
Free fruit in the afternoons for Primary 1 and 2 is helping to develop a healthier diet.

|
School Dental Service:
It is now Government policy that children should be registered with a dentist in the same way as with a doctor.
The Community Dental Service is, therefore, unable to offer treatment except in exceptional circumstances.
The Community Dental Service will continue to screen pupils in school as normal.
School Health Service:
Our school Doctor and our school Nurse can be contacted at Wallacetown Health Centre, telephone
number - 443539 and the School Health Screening Programme is as follows:
Primary 1 and 7
You will be asked to fill in a questionnaire about your child and may be invited to a health interview with the School Health Nurse or Doctor.
You will be given the opportunity to discuss any concerns with the School Health Nurse.
Screening will be offered according to National Guidelines.

School Rules:
In St Mary’s Primary, pupils are part of a caring Christian community.
The following Code of Conduct is designed to help pupils grow as part of the school community.
Pupils are expected to:
Show respect for themselves and others.
Show care for their own safety and the safety of others.
Make the most of opportunities in school.
Care for the environment provided for us all, in and out of school.
The school looks to parents for support in ensuring a secure, happy environment for teaching and learning.
Should a problem occur, the school’s policy is to involve parents at an early stage to help resolve matters.
Positive Behaviour Strategies:
In St Mary’s, Positive Behaviour Strategies are adopted in class and playground to encourage children to work
hard and to show consideration and care for others.
Each class teacher uses positive incentives to help motivate pupils and rewards are made by support staff for
good behaviour in the playgrounds.

|
The school and its community:
The Lochee Community has a very distinct identity and pupils associate themselves with the area
and the services which help support their education and growth.
The Community Policeman, the Library, the Health Centre, the shop traders, retailers and churches all
contribute to the school community and positive links have been established with them.
The Old Folks Club which meets in St Mary's Church Hall and the residents of Wellburn House
benefit from visits by the children to entertain.
The P.T.A. also promotes occasions which bring families together such as the Family Fun Day and the Bingo Night.
If you would like more information about the Parent Council please click on the link to the P.T.A. page.
Please remember, if you have any problem, no matter how small, do not hesitate to contact us.
